I had the privilege of mixing the sound for Senex, a hauntingly intimate short film by Magnus Bergman and Thim Riback. The story, set in northern Sweden, follows Valdemar as he cares for his elderly father, Rolf, and confronts his grief and childhood fears in a single night within Rolf’s apartment.
This project was a masterclass in audio restoration—I think I used every tool in my sound design toolbox to clean up the imperfect location recordings, including some help from AI. The directors, Magnus and Thim, had already added incredible foley that provided a strong foundation and clear direction for the mix.
Rolf’s apartment became its own character in the soundscape, full of eerie creaks and subtle noises—like the suggestion of birds living inside the walls. These details helped create an unsettling atmosphere that complemented the film’s themes of loss and fear. Dreams, hallucinations, and flashbacks were enhanced by the sound design, blurring the line between reality and memory in ways that brought the story to life.
It was a challenging and rewarding project, and I’m proud to have contributed to such a compelling narrative.
